My recently-purchased Canon Powershot G7 is a little wonder and I have been more than impressed with its capabilities during my New Zealand trip. The thing now is to learn more about digital photography and get my skills up to par, which is the tough part. If anything, one of the gripes about the G7 is that the wideangle is a mere 35mm. I experienced a little of this constraint on my trip, when I was trying certain shots.

Hence when I came back, I was eager to check out the accessories available for the G7. Canon currently supplies two addon lenses for the G7 – a 2.0x teleconverter (ultra-zoom baby!) and the 0.75 wide converter, effectively taking the wideangle down to 26.3mm equiv. Unfortunately, Alan Photo had ran out of stock for these accessories, as they probably aren’t the hottest selling products – most G7 users will simply use it as a point-and-shoot compact. Yesterday, I checked out the products on Canon’s website and contacted them via the web form requesting for the shops that may hold stocks. There wasn’t any replies, but this morning, I was pleasantly surprised when Cathay Photo Store at Peninsula Plaza called to ask if I was still interested. Of course I was! They have no stock for the teleconverter, but the wide converter, the conversion lens adapter and the Canon leather casing were available, and I informed them that I will run down to have a look.

During lunch time, I took a bus down to Peninsula from my office, and it started pouring just before I reached the bus stop. Is this a divine sign to warn me of what hazards may lay ahead? Ah… but Destiny is sometimes a very powerful persuader. I braved the rain, stepped into Cathay Photo Store, checked out the accessories and in less than 10 minutes, I bade farewell to S$247 with the 3 accessories tucked in the bag. Talk about decisiveness, talk about impulse purchase! But it was to be done for the bigger picture (sorry about the pun).

Since I was already spending, I had to continue the momentum and went over to People’s Park Center to replace the glasses that I broke a few nights ago. Mr. Goh at the shop showed me some colourful frames (no doubt because of my youthful good looks) which I rejected, and I asked for frames similar to the one I broke. He showed me some frameless ones, which I rejected again due to the colours. Since Mr. Goh wasn’t really taking the hint well, I had to tell him specifically that I am not the flashy sort. The next moment, he showed me some Nikon titanium frames, and I was sold. Total time taken was under 15mins and I deposited S$50 with the shop. Another $200+ spent. I was on a roll.

Needless to say, Felicia was less than impressed with my new-found skill in speed-spending. All that money spent was quickly forgotten (by me at least), when I got back home this evening and played around with my lens. Now I can take a picture of my entire living room and study without using tricks like panoramic stitching. Sweet!
