I friend I got to know through online gaming is actually a paraplegic. He told me some fascinating facts about his life as one, and some pretty depressing stuff too. But he always sounds very positive about life, always wanting to maximise it (or in his own word, “just want to get the most out of life I have got”).
I asked him for a site to check out the facts about Spinal Cord Injuries and he pointed me to http://www.scia.org.au, which is an Australian organisation. The site is informative, concise and easy to navigate.
A Google search got me to http://www.sci-info-pages.com/archives/2004_01_01_archive.html after a little bit of surfing, which is not even an official site. From this blog, I managed to link up to http://www.sci-info-pages.com/ which is also a non-Singaporean website. I do hope to see more awareness in Singapore, with higher positions on search engines for Singapore-based organisations dealing with the condition.

I typed in “spinal cord injuries singapore” in http://www.yahoo.com.sg and at the 5th entry was a speech/workshop by Society of the Disabled Singapore on the topic of Spinal Cord Injuries (http://www.spd.org.sg/articles.....eech8.html). Inside the SPD website, there are numerous links … one of which leads to the Disable Portal Singapore (http://www.disability.org.sg/home/index.asp) and that also leads to Handicap Welfare Association Singapore (http://www.hwa.org.sg/hwa.html).
I think all in all, I was able to get to the info via the Singapore based search engine fairly easily. And all the results are informative in the context of Singapore.
Something to share.

Well I did not try Yahoo search. On first glance, the SPD’s website seemed more focussed on talking about the organisation, the services, the products, the online shopping and asking for donations. Actually I wasn’t clear in my initial blog – I was referring to actual information on the condition of spinal cord injuries, be it medical or someone’s journal on the topic. http://www.hwa.org.sg/hwa.html has some information, but it is not very detailed in comparison. One wonders why the Disability Portal did not put more effort into making its rankings higher *shrug*.
