快乐星期天 (Happy Sunday) is a Taiwanese programme I watch with my wife every Sunday morning at 11am, cable channel 56. It is very interesting to me, because it is not really a singing contest of sorts, but rather marketted as a challenge to oneself. The guests are usually artistes, past and present, who like to challenge themselves on the show and be judged on their performances (usually singing). I was particularly impressed by this performance, not only because of the stellar performance, but also because the guy is a Singaporean.

During my online search for this video, I came across this blog (which interestingly didn’t look like a blog) that talks about the local Acapella scene http://acapellamusic.blogspot.com/. For those interested. Of course there are many more sites on the local Acapella scene, but I’m not about to go digging for all of them.

Prior to that beat-box performance, Huang Lie Chuan actually did a rendition of Jay Chou’s 黑色幽默. A pretty ok rendition too. Jay Chou is actually one of the weirdest phenomenon on the Taiwanese pop scene in recent years. There’s no doubt the dude has talent, but just look at him, there’s no look, there’s no charm. When he first appeared on the pop scene, he was pretty shy and couldn’t speak much, especially during press conferences. Nevertheless, he shot to fame on his debut album. Here’s an MTV of a song which many people have been doing various renditions of. Good stuff.
