The current debacle in the war against terrorism is that the Philippines government gave strength to terrorists, when they gave in to demands and pulled out of Iraq. In some ways I have to agree – you cannot stop terrorism by taking a soft approach and hope that one day, these killings will miraculously stop. It is like letting a child continue his erroneous ways, be it lies, tantrums or fights, the child needs to know that his behaviour is wrong and shall not be be condoned. Giving in will be irresponsible, to the society as a whole, to say the least.
In the country where I reside, they judge and hang a man for even entering the country with a gram of drug. And the law was set up, all in the faith and belief that preventive measures are still the best cures. And how much damage will a gram of heroine do to a person? Practically none in the short term, possibly huge amounts of damage if unchecked.
In the same light, I say laws be passed to instill coporal punishment for any acts of terrorism. Terrorism is a cowardly act to instill fear into people, in the hope of breaking down belief systems – belief in the government, in the goodness of society, in the economy. Terrorism can be countered by fear itself, by strict laws that promise harsh punishment for anyone deemed to have gone off the path of light. No draggy, long-drawn trials, no questions, no compromise. Afterall, these people (if they are still considered human), could not care less for the welfare of others. Why should they be given a fair trial in the first place?
